What Is A "Nutrition Practice"?

It's time to bring the same mindset you might use with yoga or meditation to your daily nutrition.

Nutrition is an incredibly powerful tool to shape how you feel and perform in all aspects of your life: physically, mentally, and emotionally. It's foundational. But in order to access its full potential for transforming your life, it takes thinking about nutrition in a different way. In the same way that you create a yoga practice to change your relationship with your body, or a meditation practice for emotional grounding and mental accuity, we want to help you create a nutrition practice.

A nutrition practice is about creating an awareness of what you eat and drink in order to unlock all the benefits of good nutrition. There are three basic elements to your nutrition practice that we'd like to discuss today: understanding, intention, and joy.

Understanding is what comes from internalizing information. You get information about your nutrition from all sorts of external sources: your friends, things you see on TV, research you might do online. There's always something new to learn, but not all of these messages are helpful. You also get messages about your nutrition from internal sources: your tastes, your energy levels, your mood and mental clarity. Honor the messages coming from inside you, and use them to balance the outside information to create a harmonized understanding for yourself of what you need from your nutrition practice.

Intention is about setting an achievable goal for yourself and taking regular steps toward it. Your intention will probably be grounded in your understanding of what you're looking for from your nutrition. Do remember this is not about attaining perfection, it's about starting each day fresh, aligned to what you want to do with nutrition, and doing your best. Today is always an opportunity to allow your intention to guide you to explore your relationship with the nutrients that fuel you.

Finally, joy. For us, eating and drinking wonderful things is a daily source of happiness! Wholesome, natural food appeals to so many of our senses beyond just taste, with huge varieties of colors, smells, and textures. But if you're not taking the time to notice these gifts, you can't enjoy them! Be present and aware of what you're eating. Think about where it comes from. Notice how it makes you happy now, and pay attention to how it makes you feel through your day.

Most importantly, never punish yourself with the word "should". Messages about what you "should" be doing with your nutrition will mislead your understanding, distract you from your intention, and undermine your joy. Your nutrition practice is about who you are today and the relationship you build with your future self through the decisions you make about what you put in your body.
